Isothermal calorimetry
If your product contains probiotic species, we can show you how active they are!
We have a suite of isothermal microcalorimeters all optimised to monitor bacterial growth
We can;
- Show your product contains viable bacteria
- Show how fast the bacteria grow
- Develop batch-release methods
Isothermal calorimetry measures the power being produced by a sample in real-time. A single probiotic bacterium produces ca. 2pW of power when respiring. 10^6 cfu/mL bacteria in a sample will produce 2microW of power; the power will increase as the bacteria grow and multiply in number. We add your product to growth media and measure the power produced as your bacteria grow. This tells us how quickly your bacteria grow and to what concentration.
Importantly, we see growth in real-time and in real media (growth media, defined media or biological fluids). There is no requirement for optical clarity of the medium. This is very different from classical plate-counting, where growth is determined as an end-point after (usually) 48h or more incubation on agar.
